Coming near the end of a great evening for republicans, two US Senate races have just been called. Republican Thom Tillis has defeated democrat incumbent Kay Hagan in North Carolina. With 97% reporting, Tillis led Hagan by 2%. The race between Tillis and Hagan is the most expensive US Senate race in history.
Joni Ernst, a republican who just a few weeks ago was not favored to come close to winning, in Iowa has been declared the winner against democrat Bruce Braley. Ernst won all but three counties in the state. Ernst is a Lt Colonel in the National Guard.
These wins give the GOP at least 52 seats in the Senate, with at least two others possibly in play and giving the GOP a clear majority.
